Code of Conduct and Guidelines

At HongDe Elementary School, we are committed to fostering a respectful and supportive environment where every student can thrive. Our Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for behavior and the responsibilities shared among students, educators, and parents to ensure a safe and productive learning atmosphere.

Code of Conduct

Students

Students are expected to respect the rights and dignity of others and take an active role in their own learning and personal growth. Positive behavior and a commitment to the school community are essential.

Educators

Teachers are responsible for creating a positive school climate where students are encouraged to develop self-discipline and a sense of responsibility. Educators provide structure, support, and encouragement to help students succeed.

Parents

Parents play a crucial role in establishing a positive learning environment at home. They are expected to be familiar with the school’s policies and support the implementation of these guidelines. Parents should also encourage their children to understand and respect the school’s rules.

Students at HongDe Elementary are expected to adhere to the following guidelines to maintain a respectful and supportive school environment:

  • Respect and Responsibility

Students should demonstrate courtesy, consideration, and respect toward others at all times. Disruptive behavior, actions that threaten others, or conduct that discredits the school will not be tolerated.

  • Accountability

Students who violate school rules or engage in inappropriate behavior will face consequences, which may include in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, or, in extreme cases, dismissal or expulsion. The school employs a system of progressive discipline to address behavioral issues.

  • Parental Involvement

If a student’s behavior is consistently problematic, parents will be involved in a conference with the student and school administrators to develop strategies for improvement. Continued failure to meet behavior expectations may result in the loss of the privilege to attend HongDe Elementary.

In-School Suspension

Students may be assigned to in-school suspension, during which they will complete assignments in a designated room for a full day or specific blocks of time. Parents will be notified of any suspension.

Out-of-School Suspension

In cases of severe misconduct, students may be suspended from school and all school-related activities for a specified period. During this time, students are not allowed on school property.

Dismissal/Expulsion

In extreme cases, students may be expelled from the school. Expelled students are not permitted to participate in school activities or be present on school property without written permission from the Principal.

Behavior Intervention

Students may be placed on behavior probation if their actions endanger others, damage school property, or bring discredit to the school. Failure to meet the requirements of the intervention may result in the student’s dismissal.

Parent Conferences

Parent conferences may be scheduled to develop strategies for improving student behavior. These meetings can be initiated by parents, teachers, or administrators.

Contracts

In some cases, students may be placed on a contract outlining specific behavior expectations. Violation of the contract’s terms may result in immediate dismissal.

HongDe Elementary is committed to upholding the principles of procedural fairness in all disciplinary actions. Students have the right to:

  • Be treated with respect and dignity.
  • Be informed of any allegations against them and given the opportunity to respond.
  • Participate in decisions that affect them.
  • Receive clear and appropriate reasons for disciplinary actions.
  • Appeal decisions according to school policy.

Safe School Coordinator

The Principal serves as the Safe School Coordinator, ensuring that all safety concerns are addressed promptly and appropriately. The school complies with the Ministry of Education’s Safer Schools and ERASE training requirements.

Bullying Prevention

HongDe Elementary is dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming environment free from bullying and harassment. The school has implemented bullying prevention and intervention strategies, including participation in programs such as Random Acts of Kindness and Pink Shirt Day.

Attendance and Punctuality

Regular attendance is crucial for academic success. Students are expected to attend school consistently and arrive on time. The school will work with families to address any attendance issues.

Students who wish to appeal a disciplinary decision must do so within one week of receiving the decision. The Principal will review the appeal with the expulsion committee, and the outcome will be communicated to the student and their parents.

HongDe Elementary is committed to providing an environment where all students can learn and grow in a safe, respectful, and supportive community. We believe in recognizing individual achievements and fostering positive self-esteem to maintain a high standard of behavior and engagement.
