Is HongDe a Mandarin Immersion School?
We offer a Mandarin/English Bilingual program. The Mandarin/English Bilingual Program at HongDe Elementary is designed for both English-speaking and Mandarin-speaking students to develop strong communication and literacy skills in both languages. Throughout their K-6 education, students study both English and Mandarin, with 40% of the curriculum taught in Mandarin and 60% in English.

HongDe Elementary’s Mandarin/English Program is certified by the province of British Columbia. BC’s Curriculum is designed to actively engage students in their learning, helping them develop essential skills and competencies for today’s world. With an emphasis on personalized learning, the BC Curriculum encourages flexible, innovative learning experiences while fostering critical and creative thinking.
At HongDe, we offer a Mandarin/English Bilingual Program with a Fine Arts Focus and Virtue Education, ensuring a well-rounded, holistic education for our students.
Is HongDe the only Mandarin Bilingual Elementary school in Downtown Vancouver?
Yes, HongDe Elementary is the only Mandarin Bilingual Elementary school located in the heart of Downtown Vancouver, providing students with an exceptional learning experience in a vibrant, urban setting.
How much Mandarin is taught each day?
Students at HongDe Elementary spend 40% of their school day learning in Mandarin and 60% in English. This balanced approach helps students become proficient in both languages while deepening their cultural understanding.

When should we apply?
Families can apply as early as February. Students must be five years old to enroll in Kindergarten.
Can a student start partway through the year?
We generally admit students at the start of our academic year in September. However, we can accept students throughout the year. Please contact our admissions team for more details.
Do you accept international students?
Yes, we welcome students from around the world! If a student or parent is in Canada on a student visa, they can be enrolled (those with visitor visas cannot be enrolled).
Do you have a school bus service?
